Why it's wrong
Too often presented as uniquely African, when it is a global issue. Used as a catch-all term without specifying the behaviour — bribery, procurement fraud, weak oversight, or forms of influence that may be legal elsewhere, like lobbying and political financing.
What's actually true
Several African countries rank among the least corrupt globally. Seychelles scores higher on Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index than Italy; Cabo Verde ranks above Brazil; Rwanda ranks above India. Africa also hosts globally respected institutions including the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the African Development Bank, and the Mauritius Financial Services Commission.
