Why it's wrong
Turns places into permanent landscapes of conflict, suggesting a constant, all-encompassing state of war even when violence may be localised, intermittent, or concentrated in specific areas.
What's actually true
In conflict research, war usually refers to an armed conflict causing at least 1,000 battle-related deaths in a year. What is often described as 'war-torn' is usually a more uneven reality — with violence concentrated in specific regions or periods while other areas continue to function, trade, govern, and rebuild.
Don't say · Say instead
“The war-torn country is struggling.”
“The conflict-affected country is struggling.”
When this might not apply
Acceptable when the entire country is in a recognised armed conflict for the period covered (e.g. Sudan in 2024) and battle-death thresholds support the framing. Cite UCDP/PRIO definitions where relevant.
