Why it's wrong
Reduces an election to its most dramatic incidents rather than describing the broader process. Used loosely, it makes violence sound like the defining feature of an entire election.
What's actually true
ACLED methodology makes clear that political contestation includes both violent and non-violent activity. Senegal's 2024 presidential vote was described by Reuters as having gone smoothly and led to a peaceful transition of power, despite tensions and some violent protests in the run-up.
